Most spiders in Dallas are harmless, and many are actually beneficial — they eat the other insects you don't want. A spider-free house isn't really the goal. But Texas is home to two genuinely dangerous spiders — the black widow and the brown recluse — so sensible spider control means reducing nuisance webs while specifically addressing the species that warrant caution.
The spiders that matter — and the ones that don't
Most of what you'll see are harmless nuisance spiders — orb weavers, jumping spiders, wolf spiders, house spiders. They build inconvenient webs but pose no real danger and help control other pests.
The two that warrant real caution are the black widow (glossy black, red hourglass underneath) and the brown recluse (tan, with a violin-shaped marking) — both present in Texas and both with medically significant bites. They favor undisturbed spots: woodpiles, garages, sheds, closets, boxes, and the corners of little-used spaces. If you're finding either around areas your family uses, professional removal is worth it.
Our approach
- Reduce webs — de-webbing eaves, corners, porches and entryways so living areas stay clear.
- Target harborage — treating the cracks, voids and clutter where spiders shelter, and where widows and recluses hide.
- Cut the food supply — spiders follow insects, so a general pest program reduces the prey that draws them in. Control the flies, gnats and roaches and the spider population drops on its own.
- Prioritize safety — targeting widow and recluse populations in garages, sheds, closets and storage specifically.
Prevention
Reduce exterior lighting that attracts insect prey (or switch to yellow bulbs), seal gaps around doors and windows, keep woodpiles and clutter away from the house, declutter garages and closets, and shake out stored shoes, gloves and boxes. Because spiders are a symptom of an insect supply, the most effective long-term control is a well-managed general pest program. Book a free inspection and we'll assess whether you have a nuisance situation or a species that needs targeted removal.
