Seasonal Pest Guide for Dallas–Fort Worth

What to expect and do each season across DFW — and why North Texas's mild winters mean pest pressure redirects indoors rather than pausing. Updated quarterly.

A North Texas tree through the seasons, illustrating year-round pest pressure

Dallas–Fort Worth doesn't get a real winter pest break the way northern cities do. Our warm, humid summers and mild winters keep pest activity running close to year-round — but the mix shifts with the seasons. Here's the DFW calendar, and why it points toward quarterly rather than one-off treatment.

Spring (March–May)

The wake-up. Warming temperatures and rain drive ant colony activity, termite swarms (winged reproductives — often the first visible sign of a termite problem), and the start of mosquito breeding. Spring is the ideal time for a termite inspection and to get ahead of ants before trails establish. Watch for swarmers and discarded wings on windowsills.

Summer (June–August)

Peak pressure. Heat and humidity intensify mosquitoes, cockroaches, spiders and stinging insects — especially near irrigated landscaping and standing water. This is when a mosquito program earns its keep and when wasp and hornet nests appear under eaves. Fire ants are highly active in sunny yards.

Fall (September–November)

The move indoors. As temperatures cool, rodents and roaches head inside seeking warmth and shelter — this is prime season for the first attic scratching or kitchen roach of the year. Spiders expand webs around entry points as prey concentrates near the house. Fall is the time to seal entry points before rodents find them.

Winter (December–February)

No true off-season. North Texas's mild winters mean pest pressure doesn't stop — it redirects indoors. Rodents, ants and spiders that would be outside in a colder climate move into walls, attics and garages for warmth. Rodent activity often peaks in the home during winter precisely because outside has gotten less hospitable.

Why quarterly, not annual

Because DFW rarely gets cold enough for a real pest off-season, a single annual treatment leaves long gaps where populations rebuild and new pests move in. Quarterly service — one treatment per season — keeps protection continuous, addresses each season's shift, and includes re-service between visits. It's the standard recommendation for DFW homes for a reason.

A season-by-season checklist

  • Spring: termite inspection; get ahead of ants; clear standing water.
  • Summer: mosquito program; watch for wasp nests; check shaded, humid areas.
  • Fall: seal entry points; watch for rodents and indoor roaches.
  • Winter: don't assume it's over — rodent pressure moves indoors.
